Jacksons Antique, Newark

We were excited to recently launch this heavily customised WordPress & WooCommerce website for Newark based Jacksons Antique.

Branding

We created a new brand for the business, working from a brief that we supplied, that covered inspirations for the new logo and colour scheme and the target audience. We used the Didot font for a classic feel, with a strong palette of white, mustard and chocolate.

The most famous Didot typefaces were developed in the period 1784–1811, which fits the antique feel nicely. Didot is used for the logo and website headings, with body text in Nunito Sans which is more suitable and easier to read for blocks of copy.

We provided the new logo in various formats including one for social media – recognisable with the font and colours. The client has since worked with the brand guidelines to create consistent email signatures and social media graphics.

Green Web Hosting

The WooCommerce website and the business email addresses all run on our green web hosting. It is UK based and comes with a free SSL certificate to add the padlock to the browser address bar and make the site more secure.

Web Design

Using the new branding as a starting point, we created a minimal, colourful design for the WooCommerce theme. We aim to make sites as clear to use as possibly and the homepage hero area can be used to promote new stock, and featured and new antiques are shown further down the page. The product categories use custom images that are editable from WordPress for extra visual appeal. It’s all completely mobile friendly too, from homepage to checkout.

WooCommerce Build

By designing and building our own themes we can keep things running fast while perfectly matching a brand, not limited by clunky page builders and preset templates. The custom design was turned into a theme and tested out across various computers and devices to make sure it displays properly.

We customised various things around the site, including the product image slider so it works like the eBay one. We code things directly where possible so you don’t end up with too many plugins installed – many plugins for simple features have yearly renewal costs that we can avoid.

A Mailchimp signup automatically adds people to the Jacksons newsletter and allows them to unsubscribe at any time, saving admin time.

Search Engine Readiness

WordPress and WooCommerce are fairly good out of the box and we add the Yoast SEO plugin to help the team optimise their own pages. A blog section allows increasing amounts of content to be added easily from the control panel – user centric content like this is increasingly the way to better rankings and more traffic.

Google Site Kit was installed to show an overview of Google Analytics and Search Console data within the WordPress admin area. Jacksons have been doing some paid advertising and the image above shows how much traffic that has been sending to the site.

Maintenance

To keep things running smoothly we help look after the new site with backups and regular WordPress and plugin updates, as well as keeping an eye on the security plugin and the Site Health tool. Our hosting also keeps up to date with PHP versions so that’s not lagging behind and becoming a security risk like the cheap and nasty hosting providers.
