Marketing your business online: What to talk about

Writing about your own business can be tricky at first, but the more you write, the more you will notice things that would make good website content. If you can put yourself into the mind of your target audience you will find there is plenty to write about.

Write for your audience first

A way to write successful content is to aim your content at the right people – your potential customers. While it’s important to be visible for search engines, your content primarily needs to read well for human visitors. For example, if you sell to business owners or teenagers, post things that will interest them and use language they will respond to. If you’re not comfortable writing for your audience, you could find someone from your target audience and pay them to update your site for you.

Generating ideas

If you are struggling for things to write about you could run a hashtag search on Twitter, check out your competitors’ sites or read industry publications for ideas. A ’roundup’ post of the week’s news, recent customer testimonials or your thoughts on a recent event can all make interesting content for your site.

Using keywords in your blogs

This is a good time to produce or update a list of keywords for your site using something like the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. The keyword tool helps you generate ideas for keywords and show you roughly how many people are searching for those keywords.

Business owners often search for different keywords to customers and researching takes the guesswork out of keyword choice. By choosing realistic and focused keywords in your blog content you can attract relevant people to your website.

Get some help!

If you find it difficult to write about your own products or services or just don’t have time, you could pay someone to do it for you. Having regular blogs written is money well spent, as the writer can possibly see your business from the outside and come up with new ideas. Don’t just avoid it and hope for the best!

Summary

Write primarily for your visitors, using websites and publications from your industry to help generate ideas for new content. Research and use targeted keywords for search engines to pick up and get someone to help if you are struggling for ideas or time.
